1-2-2 Defense

[A Coach Reggie Production, 2005]

The player at the top of the 1-2-2 should be the quickest, best stealer on the team. The left side of the court is how the defense looks prior to the offense bringing the ball across half-court. The right side is the transition after a pass to that spot. On the right side, the smiley closer to the half-court is the one from the top. The person at the top follows the ball everywhere. This is a good defense for trapping. If the ball is swung to the other side, the defensive players from that side, which is often called the weak side, must sprint over to pick up the ball. The player from the top of the 1-2-2 could either recover to the spots of the players who went out, or could get to the ball and then one of those players could rotate back. A lot of communication is needed for this to be effective.
