1-3-1 Defense

[A Coach Reggie Production, 2005 / The pictures of the court were created with the Jes Basketball Playbook]

These numbers do not have to be in these spots, the descriptions below should be used to determine the best spot for each player on the team:

-         hands up at ALL times, make the area appear smaller... wave your arms!

      - 3 players should ALWAYS be between the ball and the basket

      - “4” needs to be quick, alert tall

      - “4” and “5” are the tallest and best rebounders

      - “3” is next best rebounder

- “1” and “2” are the quickest

- still must keep arms up and waving at all times

        - allow the ball into the corner: FORCE THE TRAP! (Another way to do this is to force the trap near the top, corner, of the front court and not to allow it in the corner)

        - “3” is interceptor and defender against high post

 - do not slap or try to grab the ball during the trap, a foul can easily be called (see Trapping for description on the best way to trap)

- the object is to force a poor lob pass, which the "1," "3," or "4" can intercept

- other players are also in good rebounding position if opposing team is able to get a shot up

- ball is passed to the weak side, while the ball is in flight, the defense readjusts

-  Hands are still up the entire time!!

-  always have 3 people between the ball and the basket

- the “4” and “5” have switched roles once the ball went to the opposite side of the court, the reason: this will help not to tire out one person

- this is also a difficult task to master, it requires a lot of communication and practice
